For some, moving to a new address is change enough. But for Michael Monaghan, relocating from the tropics to Western Australia’s Wheatbelt wasn’t the only major shift in his life—he also embarked on a new career and earned a promotion in a matter of months.
“My wife and I were living in far north Queensland when she was offered a job in Northam, about 90 minutes outside of Perth. We were looking for a change, so we jumped at the opportunity,” Michael explained.
For Michael, the move was just the beginning of his transformation.
“I’ve always worked in and around the construction and manufacturing sectors, but I’d spent the last ten years in sales for a reticulation and hydraulics company. While that experience was valuable, I was eager to get back on the tools,” he shared.
Initially, Michael applied for a position as a general hand at the Tradesales Factory in the Avon Industrial Park. However, shortly after joining, a position opened up as the company’s Relocatable Site Solutions Team Leader.
Swapping the office for the factory floor was a challenge, especially in the first few months.
“Getting used to working on the tools again took some time. Each day presented—and continues to present—new challenges, but that’s something I appreciate as it keeps me thinking.”
When asked what he likes about the role, Michael emphasised the diversity of opportunities.
“If you show an interest in something or have an idea on how to improve something, then management is usually happy for you to explore your options,” he said.
“The company culture they’ve created here at Tradesales is also one of the best I’ve encountered. There’s no negativity; it’s staff-focused, and everyone is willing to help or chat,” Michael added.
That culture stems from values embedded in the company’s DNA: innovation, integrity, empathy, safety, and enthusiasm.
Earlier this year, the company launched a monthly values recognition award. Team members are encouraged to nominate their peers and highlight how they demonstrate these values.
Michael exemplifies the value of enthusiasm by consistently going the extra mile. Despite the high workload and numerous challenges faced by his department, Michael maintains a positive attitude and unwavering commitment. His relentless effort, proactive approach, and willingness to tackle any task with a smile have significantly contributed to the team’s success. Michael’s dedication and enthusiasm inspire his colleagues and demonstrate the exceptional value of giving one’s best effort under all circumstances.
